Victorian Aquarium

4 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"

A spectacular standing aquarium with some fanciful inhabitants. The body of the aquarium is stained and varnished walnut and glass, with antique brass accents. It stands on four brass seahorse feet connected with swagged chains. There are four brass finials at the top. The top of the aquarium has a 1 1/8" opening (for cleaning the aquarium). The "water" is cut from a tinted fresnel magnifying sheet, which gives the effect of the water's refraction in a mysterious way.

The aquarium contains a manta ray, a wide-mouth bass, a seahorse, a lobster, a crab, a starfish, and a shell holding a pearl.

This piece came about through a request for an aquarium to go into a model of Captain' Nemo's submarine  Nautilus. My client and I brainstormed for days before coming up with an appropriate design (You can see the finished product here.) I've used what I learned to make this aquarium, and I'll confess I like it even better!
