1 5/8" x 1 5/8" x 1 3/4"
Constructed of board, paper, brass, mahogany, and glass and metal beads
A neat
and mysterious box in the Edwardian style, somber and elegant in its
color and proportions. Its purpose is obscure. It may be an unknown
kind of Philosophical instrument, as it bears a strong stylistic
resemblance to the "OXFORD" box offered elsewhere on this site. The lid
opens to reveal an interior lined with astronomical maps, with a small
bell depending from the underside of the lid. One possibility is that
this was an device purpose-made by its inventor, a field instrument
used to investigate the relationship between sound and celestial
observations, although it shows no sign of wear.
