I felt sorry for ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, designed as they
were to be chiseled, like Roman capitals and runes. In the centuries
that followed Egypt's height, calligraphers and artists had used letter
forms for beautiful illuminations and endless varieties of typefaces,
so I'm doing the same for hieroglyphs.
I started turning these
basic pictographs into illuminated and historiated letters, but then
more and more of them demanded to be modern, so I let the letter forms
cross-breed with Photoshop, to create the illustrations in this book.
The original hieroglyphs appear below the illustrations.
The
book is bound in papyrus, and has decorative endpapers (some
hieroglyphs that didn't fit into the book), and paper titles on the
front and spine.
