In 1872,Scribner's Magazine asked the English Poet Christina Rossetti for a  Christmas poem, and she gave them this. It was published posthumously in Rossetti's 'Poetic Works' in 1904. It became a Christmas carol when  Gustav Holst set the poem to an old hymn tune in 1906. Other settings have been written, most notably that of Harold Edwin Darke in 1909.

Holst's golden notes run through the book, hidden by the winter storm. At the end of the song, the sun breaks through in glory. The book is bound n white Strathmore laid paper, and has a dust jacket with the final image of the poem.
