The very names of the cities shine like gold: Samarkand, Isfahan, Kokand. A transcontinental route from east to west has existed for thousands of years, and silk first arrived in Europe in Roman times. A lovely map, bordered with Chinese motifs, shows the medieval route between Constantinople and Khanbalik. 

Bound in turquoise and gold  Japanese wave paper, with a metallic gold and turquoise vellum band. . The interior is lined with the gold paper, and the map is enclosed in a vellum envelope inside a red and gold paper band.
