Simple Gifts

2 1/2" x 2 1/8"
'Simple Gifts' is probably the best-known hymn of the Shakers, an offshoot of the Quaker faith. This lovely song was written by Joseph Brackett in 1848. Brackett first joined the Shakers in Gorham, Maine.where his father's farm helped to form the nucleus of a new Shaker settlement. The tune is widely known from Aaron Copeland's inclusion of it  in his ballet 'Appalachian Spring'.

This isn't exactly a pop-up book, but I wanted the idea of turning to appear in the structure, and came up with the idea of ribbon banners. When glued into the page spread just so, they seems to unfurl and flutter a bit when the page is opened.
