Those Wedding Bells Shall Not Ring Out
"...she is another's bride,
I
saw her at the alter rail: we stood there side by side.
She shall not break her vow to me,
She's mine through all eternity,
She's mine till death shall set her free,
Those
bells shall not ring out."
1 1/2" x 2 1/8"
38 pages, 9 illustrations
A
blood-curdling piece of Victorian popular entertainment, this song
thrilled music hall audiences and family circles around the parlor
upright. The flowery sentimentality of the language may distract
today's readers from the essential brutality of the story, but this
song made strong men weep. The book, however, takes a lighter view, and
the text is backed with pretty arabesque designs, and is illustrated
with pictures from The Popular Entertainer and Self-Instructor in
Elocution.
Bound in a Florentine-like print of flowers and
sinuous leaves, on a white background. This little book has decorative
endpapers, and a paper title pasted on the front.
