Individual Miniature Volvelles

The folder is 2 5/8" x 2 1/8", and the volvelle is approximately 2" x 2"

Volvelles are probably the earliest form of movable paper engineering. Matthew Paris is credited with the first one in his manuscript Chronica majora, which made use of the wheel to determine the date of Easter. A volvelle consists of one
or more layers of parchment or paper discs and shapes fastened to a leaf, allowing for each individual layer to be rotated independently of the other components. In the 15th century, it was used as an early type of computational device, and was used to chart complex astronomical information.

I've taken ten volvelles from 1500 to 1700 and reverse-engineered them into their separate original parts, then put them together for you to play with. The volvelles I've chosen are both pretty and interesting to look at,and fun to use.

Each volvelle is glued to its own piece of board bound in a Japanese starry night paper, and is encased in a vellum folder, which is in turn contained in a card folder.

I published ten of these volvelles, boxed, in a limited edition in 2017. This edition sold out almost immediately, and I still get requests for it. Rather than alter the edition limitation, I decided to make them available indivually. I'll send you a volvelle at random, or if you have a favorite, I'll try to honor your request.
